João Carlos Martins Parreira Fernandes

Born in Leiria, Parreira Fernandes began his training in 2002.

He has been a professor at the School of Dance (ESD) since 2013, teaching in the Degree in Dance programme, in the Master’s in Choreographic Creation and Professional Practices programme and collaborating in the internship guidance in the Master’s in Dance Teaching programme.

He has been Vice-Dean of ESD since 2021, a position he also held between 2017 and 2019 and Vice-President of the Scientific-Technical Council since 2020. He is coordinator of the Undergraduate Course in Dance and member of the Scientific Committee of the Master's Course in Choreography Creation and Professional Practices, since 2021. He was a member of the Undergraduate Scientific Committee between 2017 and 2021. He is a researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Center for Studies in Music and Dance. He has been a mentor and programmer at MetaDança – Performing Arts Festival in Leiria, since 2012.

PhD in Human Motricity (Specialty in Dance) at the Faculty of Human Motricity of the University of Lisbon (2018). In 2010, he completed his Degree in Dance (Creation/Interpretation) at ESD. In 2012, he completed the Master's Degree in Contemporary Choreographic Creation at ESD and, in 2014, he completed the Master's Degree in Dance Teaching at ESD. He also has professional training in Management and Financing of Cultural Organizations and Projects. In 2020, he completed his Postgraduate Degree in Higher Education Pedagogy at the Higher Education Institute of the University of Lisbon.

In 2010 and 2012, he was awarded the “Merit Award for Best Graduate” for the Degree in Dance and the Master's Degree in Contemporary Choreographic Creation, respectively. In 2017, they were awarded by the IPL with the “Award for Recognition of Activities with Relevance to the Community – Award of Excellence” and in 2021 he was awarded the “Diploma of Merit in Scientific Awards in the Area of Arts”.

His career highlights include working with professionals such as: Rui Horta, Paulo Ribeiro, Rui Lopes Graça, Clara Andermatt, Francisco Camacho, Madalena Victorino, Teresa Ranieri, among others.

He was a teacher at Studio k – dance school from 2008 to 2014 and a teacher of Specialized Artistic Education at the Escola de Dança do Orfeão de Leiria from 2010 to 2016.

He has been an independent choreographer since 2009. The following pieces stand out: Corpus (2011); Retalhos (2012); Um Ensaio Sobre o Poder (GED-2013); entre.mitências (2014), Liberdade Provisória (2015); O Princípio da Incerteza (2016); sobre a pele (co-creation with Ângelo Neto - 2017); O resto dos outros (Companhia EDAM - 2017); profunda pele (cocriação com Ângelo Neto - 2018); (Re)tratos de simplicidade (ANIMA- 2018); FaKe DaNcE ou a metáfora do encontro (co-creation with Ângelo Neto - 2019); Princípio da queda, início do fim (co-creation with Madalena Xavier - 2019); O cansaço dos seres (2020); Um espaço para o lugar-comum (2021); Na substância do fim (co-creation with Ângelo Neto - 2022).

He has served as a jury for exams in artistic schools, namely: EDOL; EVDCR; EDAM; ED-SAFGP; Lugar Presente Dance School; Jobra Music Conservatory; Silva Marques Regional Conservatory; Madeira Professional School of Arts. Between 2018 and 2020, he was a judge for the DGArtes Creation Support Competitions.
