Amélia de Jesus Rodrigues Bentes
Graduate Degree in Dance at ESD, IPL - Performance Branch (1989); Guest student at the Gulbenkian Ballet school (1987 to 1989); Diploma in Dance and Choreography from the European Dance Development Center – College of Arts, Arnhem – Netherlands (1992); Master's degree in Communication Sciences from UNL (2013).
Rodrigues Bentes taught contemporary movement and improvisation classes for actors in the Theatre course at the Instituto Franco Portugais, in Lisbon. For 5 years, she taught and choreographed at the European Dance Development Center, in the Netherlands, Arnhem. She taught MARTER CLASSES at Concordia University, in Canada (1997).
She is currently a professor at ESD (since 2001), where she teaches Contemporary Dance Technique, Interpretation, Choreographic Composition, European Repertory Studies and Improvisation.
Her choreographic work has been presented not only in Portugal, but also in the Netherlands, Germany, France, England, Italy, Spain and Brazil. From her journey, she highlights:
- “Fun da Mental” (1997), presented throughout the country and in several cities in Europe, notably at the Polverigi International Festival, Italy. “Vivamus” (1998), premiered at Festas do Concelho de Loures and presented at Dias de la Dansa, Barcelona, at the Paisagens Urbanas Festival (Expo 98) and at the 2nd SESC Dance Biennial 2000, Brazil.
- “Declassé” (1998), premiered at Teatro Taborda, in Lisbon, and was presented in Beja, Almada, Holland and Germany.
- “Fortunas, talvez...” (1999), presented at the Teatro Carlos Alberto in Porto, in Aveiro, at the CCB, as part of the Changes Festival (Acarte 99) and the 2nd SESC Dance Biennial 2000, Brazil.
- “Noite” (2003), premiered in Coimbra - Capital of Culture 2003.
- Improvisation with Bernardo Sassetti, in João Pessoa, Brazil, at the Cineport Festival, 2007.
- In Theater/Cinema, she highlights “Conspiração” (2005), by Nuno Artur Silva and Jorge Gonçalves. She choreographed for the films “Glamour” (2005), by Luís Galvão Teles and “Os Sorrisos do Destino” (2009), by Fernando Lopes. She has also choreographed for the plays “Cabeças no ar” (2005), a musical directed by Adriano Luz, “O navio de sal” (2006) and “A Noite Árabe” (2008), directed by Paulo Filipe, at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.
- Recent creations: “Egoskin”, “Mapacorpo”, “Eternuridade” with support from DGARTES and “Sem chão sem fim” with support from EGEAC, in circulation.
In 1988, she received the 3rd National Prize for 1st CHOREOGRAPHY, "Mar és", part of the program “Novos valores da cultura” and, in 2007, she received the prize for BEST CHOREOGRAPHY, with the pieces “Ego skin” and “Cabeças no ar ”, granted by the institution Guia dos Teatros.
